Local Media

If you are a musician looking to reach out to the local Asbury Park media,
here are a few places to try:

Radio Stations

90.5 The Night -- The most receptive local radio station by far is 90.5 The Night, the local NPR affiliate. 90.5 has long supported the local music scene and often has touring artists perform live and be interviewed in the studio. The station is based at Brookdale College in Lincroft - about 5-7 miles from Asbury Park. Their signal reaches much of Central NJ.

Grock -- Located at 106.3, Grock has been sponsoring more shows in the area as of late and sometimes plays local artists but still doesn't seem that involved in the local scene. Maybe it's because in the station's former life as 106.3FM, it was the best station a local music community could ask for. The station has a very strong signal and reaches most of the state. I wouldn't guarantee that they'll be interested in hearing from you, but it couldn't hurt either.

WRAT (95.9) -- This is a station that you would think would be solidly behind Asbury Park, but rarely seems to enter town. Based in Belmar, the Rat reaches a pretty wide area and does offer a show featuring local music, but they could be doing much more. The station sometimes sponsors shows in town.

The Hawk (105.7) -- They regularly host shows in the area including a live broadcast from The Stone Pony. I don't know how often they include local acts in their rotation though.

College Stations -- WMCX, Monmouth University's radio station (88.9) and WRSU (Rutgers University) are two more stations to reach out to. Monmouth is located less than 5 miles from Asbury Park while Rutgers is about 30-35 miles north in New Brunswick. Both stations have shown support in playing both local artists and artists touring the area.

Online Radio -- There are several good online radio stations to reach out to as well. AsburyMusic.com runs one at thepenguinrocks.com, Lazlo, a huge supporter of original music, runs Blowupradio.com which features all New Jersey bands, but he also does a show called "Lazlo's Den" which features everybody, and Sean Carolyn runs the alternative station altrok.com

Other stations -- Farther away, you could look towards WDHA (105.5) in Northern NJ or WPRB 103.3, the radio station of Princeton University.

Newspapers, Entertainment Magazines & Music Websites

The Rag -- The most supportive local magazine is currently The Rag, which is available throughout Monmouth and Ocean County. The Rag regularly features articles on local music and touring artists. It comes out at the beginning of each month. The writers to contact are Donnie G. and MC O'Connor.

The Aquarian -- The most popular music publication is The Aquarian, although the publication has a more national focus than on the local area. The publication is available throughout much of the state and in some New York City clubs. There are two writers that regularly focus on the Asbury Park area that should be contacted: Jon Pfeiffer and Hal Selzer.

Asbury Park Press -- The main newspaper in the area is The Asbury Park Press. They will promote local shows and touring acts several times during the month, but it seems as though not as many people read the paper as used to. The paper is available throughout Central and Northern NJ and in NYC. Most of the people I know read it online on a somewhat regular basis. The weekend section, which previews the upcoming shows, used to be highly read but doesn't seem to be helping to draw much of a crowd anymore (based on the last few shows I've seen that were written about there)

Local weeklies -- to consider include The Coaster (Asbury Park), Tri-City News (Asbury Park), Coast Star (Manasquan), and Two River Times (Red Bank) -- all have included articles on local and touring artists coming to the area.

Online Newspaper -- An online newspaper for Ocean Grove is available at www.oceangroverecord.com - this website sometimes promotes shows taking place in Asbury Park as well.

Music Websites -- There are several local music sites you should try reaching out to. AsburyMusic.com is one. We plan on running a lot of features and interviews with local and touring acts in the near future. Blowupradio.com and ChorusandVerse.com are two more that you should check out.
